COBSEA launching the Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008!
The Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) initiated its activities on marine litter in 2006 through conducting a review on marine litter in the East Asian Seas region. In January 2008, its member countries adopted the COBSEA Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (RAP-MALI).
Much effort is still needed for the effective management of marine litter in the East Asian Seas. There is a need to increase awareness of the serious impacts of marine litter at public as well as government levels among the COBSEA member countries.
The Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008 is being organized by the COBSEA Secretariat in close collaboration with Clean Up the World, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) and the Green Fins.
Through the Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008, organizations among the COBSEA member countries are being encouraged to register their local cleanup activities to the campaign at www.cobsea.org/cleanupeas and to report their collected data to the COBSEA Secretariat, using the ICC data cards.
In connection to the Clean Up East Asian Seas Campaign 2008, COBSEA is also organizing the Green Fins Photo Contest and the 2008 COBSEA Clean Beach Awards.
